Mindfulness is a topic that comes up frequently in therapy and there are many misconceptions about what mindfulness is, why it’s helpful, and how it “works.”
Below is a list of 5 Myths and 5 Facts about Mindfulness to help us dispel misunderstandings and enhance appreciation of mindful awareness:
5 Myths About Mindfulness:
Myth: Mindfulness is “clearing your mind” or making your mind quiet.
Myth: Mindfulness is a state of calm serenity.
Myth: Mindfulness is a way to control your thoughts.
Myth: Mindfulness is a relaxation technique.
Myth: Mindfulness helps you get rid of negative emotions.
5 Facts About Mindfulness:
Fact: Mindfulness is a practice of noticing your moment to moment experiences and sensations.
Fact: Mindfulness helps you get better at feeling (NOT get feeling better).
Fact: Mindfulness helps you increase self-awareness and gain insight.
Fact: Mindfulness is observing your thoughts, even if your thoughts are scattered.
Fact: Mindfulness can happen anywhere, anytime, with any emotion.
The paradox of mindfulness is that it doesn’t have a specific outcome or goal - other than raising our own awareness. However, practicing mindfulness will inevitably help us understand ourselves better, feel less stressed, and make intentional decisions informed by our values as opposed to making reactionary decisions from a place of overwhelm.
Mindfulness allows us to feel the full range of our human experience, in all the ebb and flow of life. This helps us connect to ourselves and others more deeply.
