The April 2025 Book of the Month is No Cure for Being Human (And Other Truths I Need to Hear) by Kate Bowler. Kate Bowler is a professor, historian, and researcher at Duke Divinity School. In this memoir (a follow up to her bestseller Everything Happens for a Reason: And Other Lies I’ve Loved) she writes with honest reflection and insightful commentary about our culture today.

From the back cover: “Kate Bowler believed that life was a series of unlimited choices, until she discovered, at the age of thirty-five, that her body was wracked with cancer. In No Cure For Being Human, she searches for a way forward as she mines the wisdom (and absurdity) of today’s ‘best life now' advice industry, which insists on exhausting positivity and on trying to convince us that we can out-eat, out-learn, and out-perform our humanness.”

While Bowler often pulls from themes from her Christian philosophy/theology; I think her observations are applicable to us all, as she hones in on what makes a life meaningful. We are reminded: try as we might — we can’t outrun our humanity with all its joy, pain, turmoil, confusion, change, and love.
